1. Make sure you belong to the SRMN Google Group.
2. Log onto the G-Forge site to access the model. Within G-Forge are discussion forums for general modeling conversations and model-specific help.
3. Begin connecting through these forums with fellow researchers, policy-makers, and modelers to find common areas of interest.
4. Review the model and consider areas where you might contribute.
5. Submit changes and additions to the model using G-Forge.

Launch of the U.S. STEM Education Model
The Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF), the Raytheon Company, and the Ohio State University (OSU) officially launched the U.S. STEM Education Model to the public on July 8, 2009. The event was held at the Newseum in Washington, DC, and featured Raytheon Chairman & CEO, William H. Swanson and Congressman Bart Gordon (D-TN), Chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology, among others. Read the press release here. Among the over 100 attendees present were senior officials from the Obama Administration, congressional staff, leading education researchers, and representatives of key interest groups in STEM education. The model, which was developed by Raytheon engineers over a two year period and gifted to BHEF, was formally released into open source at the launch. A great deal of media attention was generated, including items in Reuters, EdWeek, Defense News, Investor’s Business Daily, and eCampus News.
The launch represents a major milestone and signals the next phase of BHEF’s STEM Initiative. Subsequent work will include, first, engaging the research, policy-making, and advocacy communities through the STEM Research and Modeling Network (SRMN) to demonstrate the model and encourage its use; and, second, enhancing the current model and developing next generation models. The U.S. STEM Education Model has received widespread attention from policymakers and foundations. On June 10th, BHEF, OSU, and the Raytheon Company briefed over 50 staff members of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on the model and the types of policy questions it can help answer. Following the launch in July, BHEF staff conducted a model demo for Glenn Cummings, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Adult and Vocational Education, highlighting ways in which the federal government might benefit from using a system dynamics approach when addressing STEM education challenges.
SRMN partners conducted a series of workshops at the Systems Dynamics Society Conference, July 26 -30, 2009, in Albuquerque, NM. See the schedule here. These workshops provided:
- An overview and discussion of the potential use of system dynamics modeling to improve our understanding of key STEM education and workforce challenges and to explore potential policy solutions that can strengthen student outcomes in STEM disciplines and careers.
- Guided explorations of two STEM education models, including the U.S. STEM Education Model and a model exploring the causes of the 25-year decline in U.S. STEM graduates.
- In-depth examinations of three additional STEM education models (the Sandia model, the SimBlox model, and the Boeing model), including interactive learning activities.
- Opportunity to discuss and provide feedback on the evolving STEM Research and Modeling Network (SRMN), a unique effort to create an open innovation network around system dynamics models of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
